Poetry
Fall of 2012, my junior year, I was able to take a Poetry Workshop class. It was one of the most instructive and influential classes I have taken during my time at TCU, and some of my best work was produced during the class.
The 91st Song
I wrote this poem for Poetry Workshop. The assignment was open-ended, allowing for full control and range of creativity. This poem is based on Psalm 91, using free verse to present the psalm in a new way that would be interesting to both Christian and non-Christian readers. This piece represents a goal of my writing in general, to write pieces that resonate with a large and varied audience, thus reaching more people than I could personally.
Finger-painting Massacres
This poem was written as continued practice with set forms of poetry. It is a villanelle, which means it is a 19 line poem with two rhymes. The first and last lines of the first stanza alternate throughout the last lines of the following stanzas. This particular piece portrays young Hitler in a precursor to later atrocities, related through art. Writing in a set form challenged me, improving my understanding of words and rhyme schemes. It took me out of my comfort zone and helped to make me a better writer.
